Consider an initial conversation with Gary Michael Foresman
Destined to grow more and more, we are striving to give our community resources and systems that will foster our responsibility and capability to tend to and rejuvenate our watersheds. This is far easier than we may think, and the many ways we can go about it are all empowering for us as individuals and as community members.
Greywater Systems: These can be simple renovations to your residential plumbing that redirect water that has been used once away from your septic or the sewage system and out into your landscape and personal watershed. Water is so vital for all life, so we should do our best to utilize it in as many ways as we can rather than considering it "waste" after a single use. Greywater systems change the water-anxious mind away from dreading a long shower and towards excitedly serving both yourself and the plants by nourishing your landscape.
Bonus: Fruit trees and other food-bearing plants love large amounts of water, and with biodegradable laundry detergent, soaps, and so on, they love the extra nutrients as well!
Laundry to Landscape greywater systems are one of the simplest conversions, and with each load pumping out 20-50 gallons of water, this contribution to your land can create a permanent and rewarding change. We ensure you have the option to switch the water to go to the sewer/septic if you need to use bleach or clean toxic materials.
Rainwater Catchment: Getting over 600 gallons from an inch of rain on a 1,000 square feet creates an incredible opportunity to gather and use this resource as best as we can. Having it on a higher elevation, too, allows us to let gravity help us out.
Rain Tanks are a great way capture this water and store it for the dry season. We can easily have thousands of gallons of water available to us after a rain, especially after monsoon season here in Arizona, that can last us and reduce the need to pull from our wells and watershed.
Natural Drainage systems provide both a beautiful landscape, dry creek feature and also optimizes the water falling out of your gutters or off your roof to support plants that are made for this kind of watering. This can ensure that water is directed away from your foundation and towards any plants that could best use this deep watering.
Landscaping is also an easy way to convert a downpour into a long-lasting watering for your plants and a replenishing force for your watershed. Plants use their roots to aerate and loosen the soil, which allows for water to sink and be collected for the plants to grow. A compost mulch adds a dense organic value and nutrient supplement to your soil, especailly when it rains, and also absorbs a lot more water then bare soil while reducing erosion. Wood chip or leaf litter mulch provides a final boost to water retention by shading your soil from the sun, insulating the moisture, further shielding your landscape from erosion, and it looks great!
Edible & Ecological Gardening ties this all together by utilizing all of this water available to you and your land in order to benefit a diverse array of native, ecologically appropriate, edible, medicinal, and regionally adapted plants.
